Florynce Kennedy was an American activist who fought for women’s right. As a lawyer, she also fought for equal civil rights to everyone. She believed women could choose their own ways, and no one, neither State nor Church, could say what they should do or where they should work.

Gabriela Mistral was the first latin-american to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. She was raised by her mother alone, and when she was a children’s teacher she started to write poems. She worked for education improvement in Latin America and for diplomacy. As well she never forgot her home country and always fought for women rights and justice.

Olga Benário was a german militant who was designated to fight against the fascist civil dictatorship in Brazil, she was captured and sent back to Germany, to die in a concentration camp. She was pregnant by then, her daugther was born and sent to Brazil where she became a history teacher and political activist by the time of military dictatorship.

Anne Frank was probably the most famous victim of nazism. She was just a young teenager when her family decided to hide from the nazis in Holland. During the life in the hiding place, she kept a diary with her thought and the problems jewish people were facing. I’m not sure why Anne Frank is and outstanding among millions of people who was forced to be in the same conditions as her. But I’m quite conviced that is because she brings a human face to word “millions”, reminding us that was not just a statistic number. Her diary was translate for several languages and continues to speaking with youngsters of many cultures, preventing history of being forgotten. She died in Auschwitz at the age of 15.

Benazir Bhutto was a politician from Pakistan. She was the first woman elected to be a head of a muslim state. She fought for women rights and for democracy. She was twice the prime minister of Pakistan and was chased by the government with never proved accusations. She ran away to London in 1984 and kept her fight. In 2007 she won an amnesty and got back to Pakistan where she was killed by a suicidal fanatic. He killed her, but he can’t kill the dream.

Waris Dirie is a model from Somalia. As a child she was submitted to a genital mutilation, as a teenager she ran away from home to escape an arranged marriage. Today she is a UN Special Ambassador who works for women rights and the abolition of female genital mutilation. She told her story in some autobiographic books, the first one “Desert Flower” became a movie in 2009.

Patrícia Galvão was a brazilian writer and political activist more knowing as Pagu. She was a avant garde woman who fought for democracy and freedom. She was arrested by the dictatorship but resisted. In 2010 she would be 100 years old.
